HMA produced in the field will often display different volumetric properties when compared to results in the lab. Laboratory mix and field produced mix have different physical handling of the aggregate before and after blending of materials, varied use of particulate control and a differing environment in which absorption can occur. All of these, along with other variables, can produce changes in the VMA and air voids of the field-produced mixtures when compared to the laboratory.
